10 Utterly Bad-Ass Movie Characters Who Ruled 2013

5. Robert Redford €“ All Is Lost

It takes something to command the complete attention for 100 minutes, without many more than a handful of wonderfully chosen, and devastatingly delivered words, but such was the brilliance of Robert Redford's one-man show in All Is Lost. Cast out to sea like a dead stick, and put through a host of excruciatingly unforgivable trials by a Mother Nature with clearly too much time on her hands, and far too much malice running through her veins, Redford's quiet dignity and utterly convincing despair made his unnamed character both brilliantly heroic and heart-breakingly tragic. However you choose to read the €œhappy ending€ of All Is Lost, there can be little doubt that Redford's character was one of the most resilient and hardy of screen figures of the year, never uttering so much as a swear-word despite almost being killed a handful of times, and just getting on with the job. If the Academy doesn't at least nod towards Redford for the performance, there will be little justice.
