10 Video Game Movies That Were Truly Terrible
4. Warcraft (2016)
2016 was not a good year for video game films and Warcraft failed to put its large canonical library to good use. While the director, Duncan Jones, was clearly a fan of the games, the film failed to deliver on the epic story that many had hoped for.
With comparisons made to Lord of The Rings' adaptations, somewhat predictably this fell well below expectation.
Warcraft utilized its budget on huge visual spectacles which ended up becoming a noisy CGI blur, and the story itself was derivative of the earliest and most thinly based World of Warcraft stories. This led to the first instalment of a planned trilogy (can you imagine?) being boated and uninteresting. The trilogy was quickly scrapped and Blizzard Activision continued to focus on the games.
While many would like to see a Warcraft film, it seems that a more refined cinematic adaptation is needed to appeal to fans and newcomers.
Interestingly the film had a warm reception in China, and it became the highest-grossing video game film of all time when it was released. This is an impressive accolade but is more of a testament to how poor received video game films have been in the past.
