10 Villains Perfect For The Batman Movie Trilogy (And Who Should Play Them)
4. Poison Ivy - Jessica Chastain
Like a lot of female comic book characters, Poison Ivy has become a victim of hypersexualisation - just type her name into Google images to see proof of this. Though her looks are part of her character, there’s a lot more to Pamela Isley than a pair of pouty lips.
Dr. Isley is a genius botanist who, after a chemical accident, gained the ability to control plant life and through this learned empathy for flowers and trees alike. She’s now an eco terrorist who fights for the injustice of vegetation that can never fight for itself.
Empathetic villains are often the best and having an antagonist of Batman who aligns strongly with the likes of Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion would be very of the moment and could very much give the film a heartfelt subtle message. Just try to not to make it as ham-fisted as Doctor Who did.
A rumour recently came to light where Rihanna was supposedly to be cast as Poison Ivy. The debunking of said rumour was one of the greatest reliefs to all comic fans alike. Using an artist whose songs are mostly about the wanting or act of sex couldn't mean anything other than a plan to go down the more sexual route for a depiction of Ivy. Let alone using someone that isn’t actually an actor.
No, to play Ivy you need to be both beautiful, visibly intelligent (this is not a dig at Rihanna, but do you honestly see her playing a professor?) and a redhead. Since there are only two (maybe three) famous redheads these days we've picked the one we think doesn’t get as much work as she should.
Jessica Chastain is the perfect fit for Poison Ivy and I’m sure that she’d want to try playing a comic book villain again after sadly not meeting expectations as X-men Dark Phoenix’s antagonist.
