10 War Films Where The Villain Kills The Hero
1. Platoon (1986)
Platoon is a film as much about warring ideals as it is about the nations involved.
A baby-faced Private First Class Taylor arrives in Vietnam and joins up with the 25th Infantry Division.
Here he meets the two head-honchos unofficially leading the unit. Staff Sergeant Bob Barnes is a cynical, violent leader, whilst Sergeant Elias Grodin is the far more idealistic of the two.
Almost immediately the audience is suggested whose side they should be taking when Barnes kills a village chief's wife whom he suspects are hiding weapons for the enemy.
Although Elias arrives and attempts to deescalate the situation, the village is razed. Taylor also manages to prevent a young Vietnamese girl from being raped by some of Barnes' followers in the unit.
Afraid that Elias will testify against him for the unlawful killing of a civilian, Barnes takes matters into his own hands.
During a firefight with the NVA, Barnes shoots Elias and leaves him for dead as the 25th Infantry retreat.
Although Elias makes it out of the jungle to the evacuating helicopters, he is gunned down by the Vietnamese, though it was Barnes that signed his death warrant.
