10 War Films Where The Villain Kills The Hero
5. Braveheart (1995)
The tale of William Wallace is as well-known as any. After the English invaded Scotland in the 13th Century, it is the Elderslie-born warrior that rises to defend his homeland.
After being taken away by his uncle and educated in Europe, Wallace returns to find his homeland still firmly under the control of King Edward of England. He reunited with his childhood friend, Murron, and the two are quickly wed. It is neither a successful nor long-lasting marriage, as Murron is publicly executed for fighting off a rape attempt by English soldiers.
Heartbroken, Wallace leads some men as they slaughter all of the Englishmen that occupy his hometown.
Word spreads of this success and Wallace gains legendary status throughout the country. An entire rebellion is ignited against their conquerors. Betrayals and death run rampant in the country for nearing a decade before Wallace is finally captured by the English and sent to London for trial.
During his public torture, Wallace proclaims the famous 'freedom' cry before being decapitated. His legend and martyr status allowed Scotland to fight on and reclaim their land.
