10 War Films Where The Villain Kills The Hero
4. Go Tell The Spartans (1978)
Now from 13th Century Scotland to 20th Century Vietnam and we have Go Tell the Spartans, inspired by a failed special operations mission in Tay Nguyen.
Assigned to overlook three civilian villages and retake an old hamlet that could offer a strategic position close to Da Nang is Major Asa Barker. Alongside Captain Olivetti, they are also given four new troops, including Corporal Courcey.
As they hold their position they are besieged by small arms of the Viet Cong as well as mortar fire, though they manage to stand their ground. That is until they are given incorrect information by command.
Rather than the few dozen Viet Cong predicted to be attacking, they number in the several hundred, catching Barker's unit completely off-guard. They survive the night and are given extraction orders the following morning.
Though they manage to evacuate some wounded, many are left stranded and forced to walk, with Barker and Courcey refusing to leave them on their own. In a final ambush by the Viet Cong, Courcey and Barker are both wounded. Courcey manages to hide, but Barker is not so lucky, dying as a result of his injuries.
