10 Wasted Star Wars Characters That Deserved Better
7. Captain Phasma
This character was marketed so heavily before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens that you wouldn't be blamed for assuming she was the main character. In fact, Captain Phasma, played by Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie, has barely anything to do in the two films she appears in, and even less significance in the overall story.
The design was originally intended for the character of Kylo Ren, before being reworked into a high-ranking female Stormtrooper. Phasma oversees Finn's brigade, and in admonishing him for removing his helmet without permission and referring to him only as FN-2187, she is shown to be a cold and ruthless leader.
As a little act of revenge for his time on the Death Star, Han Solo later suggests that Phasma, captured by Finn and Chewbacca, be thrown down the trash compactor, thus ending her part in the film. She apparently survives this, however, reappearing in The Last Jedi for a single minutes-long scene and unceremoniously falling through the wreckage of an exploding warship.
There's no excuse for Captain Phasma's lack of screen time. If she was just there to sell a few toys, it would've been great to know that before viewers went in. Instead, what we thought would be a formidable foe in the modern Star Wars trilogy ended up going out with nary a whimper.
