10 Ways In Which Her And Lost In Translation Are Connected To Each Other

8. Laying In Bed

The very first shot of Lost in Translation is of Charlotte laying in bed. The main internal conflict Charlotte and Bob have throughout the movie is their inability to become fully immersed in their surroundings and thus, being unable to sleep. They're constantly seen laying down in their hotel bed, but they're always awake. They're always checking the time, or they turn the TV back on. For some reason, they just cannot get comfortable. Their lack of sleep, as a matter of fact, is what brings them together. The first time they sit down and talk to each other, it's because neither of them can sleep. And from that, they're able to bond. Theodore cannot sleep because he has too much weighing on his mind. The first time we see him in bed, his eyes are still open, and he decides to join a "chatroom" via his phone. He winds up having phone sex. This inability to sleep is also what brings him and Samantha closer together. He will often lay in bed and talk to her. This is where he reveals his frustrations with the dissolution of his marriage. As Theodore and Samantha get more personal with each other, it ultimately leads to a very intense form of "phone sex" which suddenly brings new implications to their relationship. Either way, both movies seem to put a great amount of emphasis on sleep (or lack thereof), which brings us closer to each character's psyche.
