10 Ways In Which Her And Lost In Translation Are Connected To Each Other

7. Awkward Encounter With A "Prostitute"

Samantha suggests to Theodore that they should hire a body surrogate to act as Samantha so that they could physically consummate their love. Theodore tries his best to go along with the idea. He gives the woman an earpiece so that she can be in sync with Samantha, but as this woman attempts to touch, kiss, and seduce Theodore, he gradually becomes more uncomfortable. Eventually, he calls it off. For Samantha, it makes logical sense to have a surrogate perform the actions that she describes, but Theodore cannot go through with it because he can't pretend that the surrogate is Samantha. He needs that connection between mind and body and Samantha cannot provide that for him nor can she understand it. With Lost in Translation, someone sends Bob Harris a prostitute so that he can have a little fun in between his photo shoots with Suntory whisky. Bob does not seem enthusiastic about the entire ordeal and this becomes even more apparent when the two of them can't understand each other on even a basic level. It's unclear what actually happens with Bob and the prostitute when the lights go out, but we can assume it continues to end badly. Neither Bob nor Theodore can go through with these sexual encounters. In Her, it's more heartbreaking because it underlines the inherent flaw in Theodore and Samantha's relationship.
