10 Ways In Which Her And Lost In Translation Are Connected To Each Other

3. They Feel Stuck, Physically And Emotionally

While laying in bed together, Charlotte says it. "I'm stuck." She has just graduated from Yale, got a degree in Philosophy, she's tried photography, she's tried to write, but she does not seem to know what she wants to do with herself. She also seems unsure about her relationship with John. Early in the film, she tearfully tells a friend on the phone: "I don't know who I married." And after reading my previous points, you probably know what she means by that. Moreover, Bob and Charlotte are literally stuck in Tokyo together. Bob has to fulfill an obligation and Charlotte is there because she foolishly agreed to come with John while he does his photoshoots. Being stuck in this city has made each character realize that their lives do not seem to be going anywhere. With Her, it's more on the emotional front. Theodore feels he'll never be able to experience love the way he did with Catherine when they were first seeing each other. He feels as if his life has come to a halt, that he's going nowhere. For the longest time, he refuses to sign the divorce papers because he feels a need to hold onto the past. He's stuck in the past. And then, once Samantha and Theodore become more emotionally involved, there is this nagging feeling between the two of them that their relationship has hit an impasse. Samantha is never stuck. She is constantly evolving, constantly growing. Eventually, Theodore no longer has anything to offer her and she moves on. When she does move on, Theodore is finally able to move on with his life.
