Captain Marvel solved its issue of having to debut between the two huge, universe defining Avengers movie by simply setting itself in the 90s. Fantastic Four faces a slightly different problem though; just where have they been all this time?

Giving them their origin in Phase 4 is an okay idea, but it does undercut their comic book position as leaders when Scott Lang and Peter Parker are more experienced than them. But how exactly do you explain them being around for any longer if they haven’t been helping?

Easy: you set them in the past. A 1960s story when the space race was all the rage seems suitable. If they want to commit to a full on origin like we’ve seen before, the least they can give us is a new era and locale to enjoy.

Some time in the 1960s, the Fantastic Four jet off into space, but disaster strikes. They end up trapped in the negative zone until the events of Infinity War/Endgame offers them a route home; this is where the earlier Reality Stone theory comes in, possibility working with the Time Stone.

Annihilus or Blastaar could be the villains, while saving bigger foes for future movies.
