10 Ways The DCEU Will Change Without Zack Snyder
3. More Restraint
Snyder's most vocal fans will - rightly - point out that his Ultimate Cut of Batman v Superman is not only the superior cut, but is also a more pure expression of Snyder's vision. The extended run-time there - which Warner Bros had balked at - allowed him to tell every aspect he wanted to tell, and given that, it's no surprise that the studio-sanctioned edits make the cinematic cut look like it had been butchered.
But Snyder only being able to tell his story in a cut that's too long for the studio and a mainstream cinematic release is a problem (even though they scored double financial returns by selling it twice). He has always had a problem with restraint, not only in run-time but in building images and characters, and that is a particularly pertinent failing of a director.
It almost feels like Snyder's agenda is always to make his films an ordeal, which encourages a rather heavy-handed approach to content (as well as that ominous feeling of weightiness that critics misrepresent as "darkness"). Sometimes, pulling back is a far better approach, and making 100 minute comic book movies shouldn't be in any way classed as a failure.
Here's to more of them in the future DCEU.
