10 Ways The Hunger Games Films Were Almost Completely Different

5. The Budget Was Supposed To Be Smaller

The original budget for The Hunger Games was $60 million and the studio was apparently pretty focused on keeping it that way. Given that the film featured a huge cast, multiple action sequences in a variety of locations and CGI effects, this seemed an impossible task. Had Lionsgate held strong, the end result would be considerably less impressive than it was. Eventually, director Gary Ross pushed the budget to $90 million after concerns he would have to cut important set-pieces from the film, which would have seriously angered fans of the books. Catching Fire faced similar concerns and ended up with a shooting budget of $130 million rather than the proposed $78 million.
