4. Batman of the Past
While all of the Batman films have taken place in a nondescript time period, theyve all often alluded to the modern day. Burtons two movies might look a little gothic and expressionist, but they equally depict Gotham to be pretty similar to 1980s New York. Nolans films take everything a step further towards realism, by turning Gotham into a stylised version of modern day Chicago in The Dark Knight. What would be really awesome would be for a film which takes a step back in time and lets Batman loose in a completely different era and society. To get an idea of how great this could be, look no further than 1989s Gotham By Gaslight comic book, which pits Batman against Jack the Ripper. Set in an alternate timeline which transforms Gotham City into Victorian London, Gotham By Gaslight ingeniously has the infamous Ripper framing Bruce Wayne for his gruesome killing-spree. Of all the possible reinventions that could be done with Batman on the big screen, nothing is cooler than the idea of a European Gotham City in the Victorian-era. Who wouldnt want to see Batman invading a period drama and bashing cockney heavies and mass murders.
