Streaming services are able to snare big names like the Wachowskis, and Woody Allen thanks to a combination of being the in thing at the moment, and having an outrageous amount of money at their disposal, but at the same time, there’s a missed opportunity to grow the next generation of stars.

Working with big stars is a sensible move when a streaming service is first making original content as it helps to create interest for a new series, and shows that the company knows what it’s doing.

But once a company is known as a producer of high quality content, a big star isn’t as much of a necessity. And with some sensible budgeting and a newcomer steering the ship, a streaming service could knock out a pretty decent series that not only has more potential of being fresh and original, but is also a fraction of the cost of working with a bigger name.

Not only can this help a smaller streaming service like Britbox or Acorn TV move into original content, but streaming services have a built-in audience and can use it to grow a writer or director’s career. Not only would that streaming service get the financial benefits of kickstarting that bright young thing’s career, but they’d have the bragging rights of being the company to discover them, and the groundwork for a potentially long and lucrative partnership.
