10 Ways To Save Streaming Services
4. Think Global
Of the big three streaming platforms, Netflix and Amazon Prime operate internationally, but Hulu is only available in the US and Japan, and smaller services have a similarly limited reach. But eventually, the domestic market will reach saturation point, and the only options for serious expansion will be abroad.
While other countries have their own services like the UK’s NowTV and Danish company Blockbuster, a foreign company with the right range of content can significantly affect a company’s market. It’s why Netflix has entered this generation’s lexicon, and is being mentioned more than anything else here. Analyse the market of your chosen country, licence out popular shows that haven’t been snapped up by competitors, and watch the business expand.
But the real secret to expanding into other countries is to tailor content to overseas markets. Dub original content and shows that aren’t broadcast internationally, and, more crucially, create content specifically for those countries. Foreign shows can do well abroad but if you really want people’s money, give the people what they both like and want.
And, naturally, Netflix is the first to pick up on this in a big way, announcing three new Indian shows on the back of producing Sacred Games, an English-Hindi cop drama fronted by Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan, helping the company take further steps towards dominating the Indian market.
