10 Ways Zoolander 2 Is Everything That’s Wrong With Hollywood

1. It Was Made In Place Of An Original Idea

The really sad thing is this: Paramount threw a $50 million budget at Zoolander 2, when they could have made literally anything else instead. A really weak script came through, but because some big names were attached and there was a recognisable brand name on the front page, the studio decided to green-light the film anyway. Who cares if it€™s going to be awful? People will buy tickets anyway! This is the very heart of Hollywood thinking at the moment. More than ever, studios are reaching for every recognisable brand name that they have the rights to and trying to squeeze more money out of it. TV shows are becoming films. Films are becoming TV shows. Superheroes you€™ve never heard of are getting movies. Spin-offs are being green-lit from films that haven€™t even entered production yet. The $50 million that got wasted on a subpar Zoolander sequel could€™ve been invested in new talent, or at least on an actually-decent film for these established stars to be in. But no, instead we got a film that€™s emblematic of everything wrong with Hollywood at the moment, with cameos coming out of its arse, a boring VFX-heavy ending and barely a whiff of an original idea.
