10 Ways Zoolander 2 Is Everything That’s Wrong With Hollywood
7. Its Plot Is Overly Complicated Nonsense
Hollywood films are under more criticism than ever these days, especially when it comes to poor storytelling decisions and blatant plot holes. Almost every major movie that comes out gets this treatment, with Star Trek Into Darkness and Skyfalls overly convoluted, plot-hole-filled narratives standing out as particularly prevalent examples. You might not expect a comedy sequel like Zoolander 2 to fall into these traps, but somehow it does. The film begins as a murder mystery before blundering into a farcical prison break and eventually ending with a weird conspiracy theory about the fountain of youth. At one stage someone rips a mask off and reveals a totally different character underneath. You might find yourself thinking why is Zoolander 2 trying to be Mission: Impossible? Nobody knows the answer to that, but everyone can tell that the results arent great. This nonsensical plot means that the characters mainly just charge from one scene to the next, without stopping to be funny or interesting along the way. This is a shame, especially in a world where 22 Jump Street - a comedy sequel with an engaging story, loads of jokes and even character development - exists. It's clearly not impossible to do this right, which just makes Zoolander 2 look lazy.
