9. Chicken Dinner - Eraserhead (1977)
Eraserhead has got to rank among the most surreal and audacious directorial debuts in history. Made as a result of a scholarship he received to the AFI Conservatory, the film, like much of the director's work, is wildly open to interpretation but the basic premise is that a quiet and unassuming man named Henry Spencer (played by Lynch-regular Jack Nance) ends up living in a small apartment with his girlfriend and mutant-like baby while he suffers from nightmarish dreams and visions. Any number of the bizarre sequences could have made this list but I've chosen in the one in which Henry is invited to his girlfriend's family home for dinner and something very strange happens when it comes to carving up the chicken... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqV41XH_dLI
