10. Laura Dern's Crazy Smile - Inland Empire (2006)
First up is a small moment from what is Lynchs most divisive film, the ever-challenging Inland Empire. Shot on digital - a first for the director, an experience he loved so much he has said he doesnt think hell return to shooting on film - its non-linear and frankly confusing narrative put even some die-hard Lynch fans off. However, for those who were in tune with it (I happen to think it's somewhat of an underrated masterpiece) it provided a lot to chew on and some seriously weird scenes. Not the least of those was a short scene of Laura Dern walking in slow motion up a dark driveway, aglow in spotlight, towards us. She gets closer and closer until we realize she has an unnaturally wide smile on her face. And just as she gets up to the camera she suddenly lunges forward - seriously creepy stuff. According to Lynch himself, the moment was inspired by something that happened in his real life when Dern happened to move in next door to him and he was greeted with her smiling as she made her way towards his house. http://youtu.be/WSXhb0kPXLc
