3. The Mystery Man Lost Highway (1997)
Lost Highway, one of Lynchs most consistently underrated features, is about a man (played by Bill Pullman) who gets framed for the murder of his wife and sent to prison, before mysteriously changing into a young mechanic and living a new life. Its one of Lynchs boldest films in terms of narrative choice i.e. the main character and actor completely changing half-way through, and is notable for Lynchs use of soundtrack music instead of just Angelo Badalamenti's written score. One of the film's creepy highlights is when a character known only as the Mystery Man (played by Robert Blake) approaches Pullmans character at a party. He tells him that theyve met before and that hes at his house right now. Pullman doesnt believe him so the man tells him to Call me. He does and the man seemingly answers the phone, in two places at once. It's a fine example of how Lynch can take a normal situation and spin it into the realm of the weird and creepy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZowK0NAvig
