Larry Cohen is renowned for making horror films with out-there premises, involving killer babies and voodoo pterosaurs. Having said that, The Stuff is really loopy, even by Cohen's standards.

After a gooey substance is discovered underground, a team of salesmen notice how addictive it is, incentivising them to promote it as a delicious dessert called The Stuff. Containing zero calories, it isn't long before the creamy treat takes the country by storm.

But when a boy called Jason discovers The Stuff turns its consumers into zombie-like creatures, he takes it upon himself to rid the world of this brainwashing ooze once and for all.

As hard as it is to believe, The Stuff is much smarter than it sounds. Despite the preposterous story, the social commentary involving consumerism, destructive addictions, and corporate greed is surprisingly profound. The Stuff also contains many marvellous special effects that will leave viewers saying, "How the hell did they do that?"

Now, watching people fighting off globs of malicious yoghurt may be too silly to be deemed scary. Nevertheless, the satyrical sci-fi is a lot of fun and worth checking out.
