One of the most unique horror films in recent years, director and co-writer Valdimar Jóhannsson’s Lamb takes viewers to a picturesque farm in rural Iceland. Here, we meet spouses Ingvar (Hilmir Snær Guðnason) and Maria (Noomi Rapace). They work the farm and tend to the sheep themselves, though a tragedy in their recent past still lingers over them.

However, when Maria becomes enamoured with one of the lambs, the couple raise it as if it were their own child, naming her Ada. However, Ada's soon revealed to be a human-lamb hybrid.

What follows plays out more like a dreamlike family drama than a conventional horror flick, though there are hints of some sinister presence roaming the hills. By the time the ending rolls around, the couple couldn’t be happier with their new family. But it’s here the filmmakers hit audiences with an unexpected curveball.

While Ingvar and Ada are out walking, he’s shot by what can only be described as a humanoid ram, who’s presumably Ada’s real father. The ending is a fittingly strange conclusion to a very peculiar film.

Interpretation of any symbolism is entirely down to viewers as the filmmakers aren’t entirely sure what it means themselves.
