10 Weirdest Endings In Horror Movies
3. The Lighthouse (2019)
Set in the late 19th century, Robert Eggers’s critically adored The Lighthouse follows newly recruited lighthouse keeper Winslow (Robert Pattinson) as he undergoes his first job under the supervision of gruff seaman Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe), who refuses to let Winslow anywhere near the light. The conditions are awful and Wake rules the lighthouse with an iron fist. And when a ferocious storm cuts-off access to the island, both men are left stranded as their supplies begin to dwindle.
As drunkenness and paranoia set in, madness takes over as tensions between the men escalate. It’s clear that this situation was never going to end well, however audiences weren’t prepared for just how weird this period horror would become.
Alongside Winslow hallucinating Wake as a tentacled sea monster and attempting to bury him alive, the finale enters another level of madness when Winslow finally gains access to the light. Upon approach, the hatch opens itself to allow Winslow to reach into it. The light washes over him as his laughter changes to agonised screams. He pulls away and falls down the stairs, his dying body devoured by seagulls.
Whether the events are propelled by madness or superstition, the ending will have audiences transfixed.
