10 Weirdest Ideas Turned Into Horror Movies
5. Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes
Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes is as mad as its title - a movie about mutant tomatoes that kill people, and the country wide panic that ensues. This 1978 B-movie parody was built from the bottom up to be absolutely absurd and dreadful - much like 1988’s Killer Klowns From Outer Space - but that’s no excuse for the weird idea of psychotic vegetation that slaughters their way across the USA.
Inspired by the ridiculous B movies of the 50s, John De Bello decided to drag his hometown in to make a purely independent picture about a world being under attack by murderous fruit made out of foam and beach balls. Most of the cast hadn’t acted on a film before, and it was filmed on a shoestring budget - to which the majority went towards a $60,000 helicopter that they crashed and destroyed on the first shot they used it.
Weirdly, however, the sheer absurdity of the film made it incredibly popular with audiences, spawning multiple sequels, became a launchpad for George Clooney’s career, and it even spawned a Saturday morning cartoon series with an annoyingly catchy theme tune. Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes became the icon of bad B-Movies, and it’s a film that’s still enjoyed by people today.
