When a role, one that involves you working with a bunch of kids, draws comparisons to Michael Jackson, you know its pretty weird. Burton and Depp have both rejected that his take on the amazing chocolatier resembles the King of Pop, but once you see it you cant really un-see it. Depp wanted to do something rather different with the character, given Gene Wilders beloved portrayal, and the result is a Wonka that is part-childlike, part-demented, with a look based on Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Its a pretty divisive performance, and one that probably depends on how you view this film in comparison to the original (although it does stick closer to the book). He brings across a Wonka who is still tormented by his childhood, is still partially a child himself, and also seems to hate children, all at the same time. The problem with his weirdness is that theres arguably too much of it. He goes full-Depp on this film, and you should never go full-Depp. Which of Johnny Depp's madcap performances is your favourite? NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
