10 Weirdest Roles Of Johnny Depp's Career (So Far)

1. Willy Wonka

When a role, one that involves you working with a bunch of kids, draws comparisons to Michael Jackson, you know it€™s pretty weird. Burton and Depp have both rejected that his take on the amazing chocolatier resembles the King of Pop, but once you see it you can€™t really un-see it. Depp wanted to do something rather different with the character, given Gene Wilder€™s beloved portrayal, and the result is a Wonka that is part-childlike, part-demented, with a look based on Vogue editor Anna Wintour. It€™s a pretty divisive performance, and one that probably depends on how you view this film in comparison to the original (although it does stick closer to the book). He brings across a Wonka who is still tormented by his childhood, is still partially a child himself, and also seems to hate children, all at the same time. The problem with his weirdness is that there€™s arguably too much of it. He goes full-Depp on this film, and you should never go full-Depp. Which of Johnny Depp's madcap performances is your favourite? Share your picks below in the comments thread.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
