10 Weirdest Roles Of Johnny Depp's Career (So Far)

2. Mad Hatter

After years of playing several characters who could be considered €˜as mad as a hatter€™, it made perfect sense for Depp to finally play the Mad Hatter, in Tim Burton€™s big-budget live-action/CGI adaptation of Alice In Wonderland. The result, both in terms of Depp€™s performance and the film as a whole, were rather disappointing. While the movie is visually excellent, it never really manages to capture the nonsensical joy of the source material. As for Depp, he has spoken of how he wanted to bring a more human side to the Hatter, rather than having him just be a one-note character. One of the ways he does this is by using differing accents depending on emotion, so a gentler voice for the more airy side to the Hatter, and attempting to go full-on Rab C. Nesbitt when really wanting to display the character€™s darker madness. The orange wig, meanwhile, was supposed to signify the mercury poisoning frequently suffered by hatters. It€™s a bit of a mixed performance, but one that helped the film earn over $1bn, and he€™ll be reprising the role in the 2017 sequel Alice Through The Looking Glass. It may not be Depp€™s best performance, but it€™s definitely one if his weirdest. You could even say it€™s mad.
