10 Weirdest Roles Of Johnny Depp's Career (So Far)

9. Sweeney Todd

Depp€™s first appearance in an adaptation of a Stephen Sondheim musical isn€™t as weird as his second (more on that later), but it is the better of the two. And, let€™s be honest, playing a barber who slits customers€™ throats is still pretty weird, in a dark and murderous sort of way. Sporting a heavy amount of make-up and a white streak in his hair, in order to convey a sense of the rage Todd possesses, Depp also took singing lessons to prepare for the role. His voice may lack a real sort of melodic singing quality, but was rather well-suited to the part. Aside from his vocals, Depp also brought passion and sadness to the character, as well as being convincingly twisted. He received his third (and most recent) Academy Award nomination for the role.
