10 Weirdly Feel-Good Horror Movies With Happy Endings
3. The People Under The Stairs
The Movie: Part social commentary, part f**ked up fairy tale The People Under the Stairs follows wily young protagonist Fool as he attempts to burgle the home of his rich and very weird landlords the Robesons after they evict his family from their home to make way for some brand spanking new condos.
It soon turns out ‘Mommy’ and ‘Daddy’ Robeson aren’t just evil gentrifiers but a whole other level of messed up. Not only are they actually a brother-sister duo engaged in an incestuous relationship, they also kidnap kids and lock them in their cellar when they misbehave. Hence now they have a basement brimming with overgrown kids who haven’t seen sunlight in years and have turned to cannibalism to survive.
After Fool finds himself trapped in their house he must gather his wits to escape the psychotic duo, while being hunted down by Daddy Robeson – perplexingly dressed in BDSM garb – and his vicious Rottweiler.
The Happy Ending: Fool manages to outwit the pair with Mommy Robeson ending up as fodder for her cannibalistic kidnapped kids and Daddy Robeson getting blown to smithereens in an explosion set off by our protagonist.
The explosion catapults the Robeson’s riches into the neighbourhood whereupon the tenants they’ve been exploiting grab as much as they can while the kidnapped kids escape at last.
Sure, it’s going to take them sometime to reintegrate back into society what with them being morbidly pale cannibals and all but with a bit of vitamin D and a vegetarian diet they might just be okay. And more importantly, Fool now has more than enough capital to set him and his family right for years. Take that, you weird incestuous gentrifiers.
