10 Weirdly Feel-Good Horror Movies With Happy Endings
2. The Babadook
The Movie:
Six
years after the tragic death of her husband in a car accident on the way to
hospital to deliver their son, grief-stricken widow Amelia Vanek is raising
their troubled young son Noah alone.
After a mysterious pop-up book about the titular Babadook – a scary monster who preys on fear and other such negative emotions, of which there are plenty in the Vanek household – appears, mother and son experience increasingly spooky goings-on in their home while Amelia’s grief and depression turns into anger towards her son.
Soon, the Babadook takes over Amelia entirely causing her to kill their pet dog Bugsy (RIP, little fella) and try off her own kid too. Eventually able to overcome him, Amelia confronts both the Babadook and her own unprocessed grief prompting it to retreat to their basement.
The Happy Ending: Post-ordeal, Amelia and Noah are cohabitating relatively peacefully with their basement-dwelling Babadook who although requiring regular feedings of worms and maggots – a metaphor for Amelia continuing to face her grief – isn’t too much of a bother.
Both the Babadook and Amelia’s grief are under control leaving mother and son to lead a happy and wholesome life together. Minus their pet dog, of course.
