10 What If? MCU Scenarios Marvel Should Explore
3. What If Dr. Strange Were A Disciple Of Dormammu? (Volume 1, Issue #18)
In one of the more interesting character changes of the What If? series, having Dr. Strange be the student of the entity he usually strives to control and contain makes for a genuinely thought-provoking comic. Strange essentially takes over the role that would normally be Mordo's - his arch-enemy - in the comics, eventually killing the other magician so as to properly steal his place as an agent of Dormammu.
Seeing the arguably canonically power-hungry Strange be slowly turned to the dark side feels incredibly believable, and the subsequent chaos that this event results in - both externally in the world Strange destroys, and internally in Strange's own consciousness - results in a story that has no right to be as powerful and or as representative of the character as it is.
Strange does turn good again at the end of the comic, everything before this explores the darker side of Stephen Strange that really deserves to be focused on more.
