10 Wildly Unnecessary Movie Sequels That Were Awesome Anyway
4. Ouija: Origin Of Evil
Just to address this off the bat, this is also a prequel rather than a sequel (it's the last one, promise), but making a follow-up to Ouija sounded beyond pointless. Although it fell into the Blumhouse studio tradition of making loads of money compared to its tiny budget, the reviews were scathing. The film's gimmicky premise ended up offering little more than boring, generic horror with a few forced jump scares and a lame villain for good measure.
Gladly, Ouija: Origin of Evil U-turned the series by being an utter creepfest from start to finish. Another film going back to the 1960s, director Mike Flanagan used the decade to its full advantage, not only in the superb production design but also in the film-making techniques used.
The film took its time to get the audience invested in the characters and let tension ramp up to then release it all in cleverly horrifying ways. A pleasant surprise for anyone who remembered its predecessor, Ouija: Origin of Evil was a refreshingly unsettling film that did not rely on standard jump scares but instead offered the genre something different.
