10 Wildly Unnecessary Movie Sequels That Were Awesome Anyway
3. 22 Jump Street
21 Jump Street came out of nowhere and became the surprise hit of 2011. The chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum alone was a joy to watch, but the film also embraces what it is and invites the audience along to have a good time with it. Its financial success meant another one was bound to get made, but the unwritten rules of cinema state that unless Leslie Nielsen is involved, comedy sequels never stack up to the original.
22 Jump Street was the exception to that rule. The reason that it worked so well was keeping the same elements that hit the first time and then taking them to the next level. Although it may have leaned a bit too much on that at times (just because you joke that it's virtually the same film doesn't automatically mean you get a free pass to make it again), it more than makes up for it with witty, quotable dialogue and great comedic performances by Hill and Tatum.
The sequel was also responsible for some of the funniest on-screen moments of the decade, specifically the grand opening (the memes it generated on its own merit mentioning here) and two back-to-back scenes involving Ice Cube that will be hard to forget. Hollywood, take note, this is how you make a comedy sequel that doesn't just recycle the same jokes.
