10 Worst Betrayals In Horror Movie History

7. Mike Throws The Map Away - The Blair Witch Project (1999)

The Descent
Haxan

"In October of 1994 three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary... A year later their footage was found." The tag line to this controversial horror is legendary and whatever your personal tastes are, this film was fresh, original and extremely well thought out.

The most often discussed elements of The Blair Witch Project usually come down to two main points: the supernatural forces which haunt the forests of the Black Hills and secondly, the found footage style of filmmaking.

There is, however, another element to this film which many people found far more unsettling than the first two and that is the notion of getting lost in the woods. We've all been lost in the woods at some point, however, it's one thing getting lost in the UK - getting lost in the woods in the US is an entirely different matter.

Anyone who's been stateside will know too well the literally thousands of miles of uncharted land that stretch from coast to coast. Getting lost in the States is potentially life threatening if you're unprepared. So when Heather asks who has the map and Mike admits to throwing it in the river the previous day, the betrayal of trust ultimately leads to their deaths.

Heather even uses the word 'betrayed':

"You have betrayed us all beyond... way f*cking beyond... "

It's a mike-drop (sorry) moment for the story; the realisation that they may never escape from the forest is terrifying for all three not-so-happy campers...
