5. Pelle Lures The Friends To Swedish Hell - Midsommar (2019)

The Descent
A24

When is a friend not a friend? When they lure you to a Scandinavian retreat and murder people in a series of grisly and bizarre, drug induced pagan rituals, right after the death of your entire family, all while your boyfriend is being a selfish assh*le.

Midsommar is the superb 2019 follow up to Ari Aster's breakthrough occult horror Hereditary, which considering how good Hereditary was, is no mean feat. Aster relies heavily on foreshadowing, religious sacrifice and the breakdown of interpersonal relationships to effectively scare the hell out of us, while mounting up some gnarly death sequences and Wicker-man style conspiracies.

Dani tags long with her boyfriend and his mates to Sweden, so they can research a thesis and she can try to heal from the murder/suicide of her parents and sister. Little do they know that Pelle, a Swedish local and uni pal, has planned the entire thing from the start.

The pagan ritual, a celebration of nature, life, death, clogs, etc, requires sacrifice and we don't mean the diet kind. Drugged and lulled into acceptance, Dani relaxes as the boys are skinned, hacked up, 'blood-eagled' and burnt alive by the merry maypole types, all at the careful planning of Pelle himself.

Coming across like a benevolent friend and caring naturist type of dude, Pelle is quite charming, so much so that why would anyone begin to suspect him capable of such betrayal? People get carried away at festivals but this is ridiculous...
