10 Worst Birthdays In Horror Movies

6. Happy Birthday To Me (1981)

Clown 2014
Columbia Pictures

I imagine there are few things scarier or more upsetting than being framed for muder, never mind the murder of every single one of your friends and your father too. But being framed at your own birthday celebration? Well, that just takes the metaphorical cake.

Ginny is a member of an elite friend group at the local highschool, known as the ‘Top Ten’. Each of the members are the most privileged, stereotypically ‘popular’ kids at school, but this can’t protect them from being picked off one by one by a murderer. The thing is that the murderer appears to be Ginny herself, but she doesn’t remember committing any of the crimes.

The whole thing culminates with a birthday dinner that is the stuff of nightmares. Ginny’s father returns home from a business trip to find each of his daughter’s Top Ten friends and his wife all dead and propped up sat around the table. After walking into the room singing to herself, his daughter proceeds to slash his throat before revealing herself to not be Ginny at all - whilst the real Ginny sits at the table in horror.

It turns out that a jealous friend, Ann, who blames Ginny and her family for the demise of her own relatives has taken revenge by disguising herself as Ginny and committing a string of murders. Even after the real Ginny overpowers Ann, the damage is already done as police enter to see Ginny surrounded by the corpses of all her friends (including Ann) and family, knife in hand.

I know we’re not meant to like the ‘popular’ kids but you can’t help but pity Ginny. She already had birthday trauma from her mother’s death several years prior and now her newest birthday present is gonna be the gift that keeps on giving: life in prison.
