5. The Trade Federation's Forces - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Love it or hate it, The Phantom Menace broke new ground for visual effects in cinema, and loathe Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) though you might, it's impossible to deny the character's fluid expressiveness.

But not all effects are created equal, as is made painfully clear in the film's iffy Battle of Naboo sequence.

Though much of the battle actually looks relatively good - despite how utterly bland the setting and colour palette are - there are some truly ghastly shots peppered throughout.

Easily the most-ridiculed of these images appears almost immediately after the Gungans' shield is destroyed and the Trade Federation's forces make hasty pursuit.

The Federation's Armored Assault Tanks look like incomplete renders that an intern accidentally approved for the final cut on a lazy Friday afternoon. Even for 1999, this wouldn't pass muster in a PC FMV game, let alone a $115 million blockbuster.
