10 Worst Changes Peter Jackson Made To The Hobbit

1. The Smaug Chase Sequence

By the time the second Hobbit movie was half way through, we knew the trilogy could not be saved. The first movie was by no means perfect, but there was enough there to leave the audience thinking the second two might save it.

Sadly that was not to be. We were subjected to the ridiculous barrel ride sequence, an imagined rivalry between Legolas and Bolg - which only served to show us how boring action scenes could be - and then we were hit with the sh*t show of the Smaug chase scene.

By this point it was clear Jackson had lost his way. The careful planning with which he crafted sequences in The Lord of the Rings made way for scenes made on the fly. It's clear the whole project got away from Jackson. He was essentially forced to pick up the reins of a multi-million dollar franchise, without the creative control or planning time he'd had for The Lord of the Rings.

Scenarios were cobbled together with a few real-time action shots, all plastered over with an obscene amount of rushed CGI. All this scene served to do was kill 20 minutes of screen time, for a movie that didn't warrant existing.
