The prospect of at least one Avatar sequel has been in discussion since before the original even hit cinemas, and at various times writer-director James Cameron has claimed that a third and fourth movie were also in the works.

Then Cameron showed up at CinemaCon earlier this year and announced that a staggering four sequels were in the works, due for release in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023 respectively. Moreover, they will be filmed together.

While it'll be interesting to see the absolute insanity of Cameron's plan unfold, he seems to be overestimating quite how much people want more Avatar movies. Avatar 2? Sure, and if it's decent, maybe a third, but it's hard to get hyped about a five-film series when we've only had one (admittedly good) film hit screens so far.

Could this be the time where Cameron's knack for proving people wrong finally falters, and gives way to over-confidence?
