10 Worst Disaster Movies Of All Time
8. Independence Day: Resurgence
Roland Emmerich. Get used to that name, because he's going to come up more than once in this piece. We can thank his crappy oeuvre for that.
That being said, the original Independence Day is one of his better outings. It's far from perfect. It's too long, there are far too many characters, and the final conceit that Jeff Goldblum can hack an alien computer is ridiculous.
But it's charming. The cast are all great, the chemistry between Will Smith and Goldblum is electric, and it has a great sense of tension. The lead up to seeing the ship alone is fantastic, not to mention the incredible destruction sequence that follows.
The sequel on the other hand has literally none of this excitement. Sure, Goldblum is back, but without Smith his character feels anaemic. The city destruction set pieces are just too chaotic to be interesting. What should be awe inspiring is just messy and confusing.
This isn't even mentioning the egregious attempts to set-up a cinematic universe in the film's climax. Come on Roland, we all knew this series wasn't getting another entry. The box office numbers didn't even need to come in for us to all see this was a flop.
