10 Worst Film Couples Of The Last 20 Years
1. Hayden Christensen And Natalie Portman - Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones
If you were ever curious what it looks like when two attractive cyborgs pretend to fall moderately in love, you need only to watch the scenes involving Anakin Skywalker and Padmé. Their "unrequited" love is most egregiously zapped of any passion for the duration of Attack of the Clones, which is doubly unfortunate because it's the prequel most dedicated to the couple's forbidden romance.
Rather than oozing with the necessary mixture of yearning and anxiety, Hayden Christensen's portrayal is like watching a pothead decide what kind of sandwich to make: languid, confused, and quite frankly exhausting. Portman's performance is somehow even less spirited, like she's just realized she has to guide this feeble stoner through the entire sandwich-making process for three whole months.
The blame shouldn't fall entirely on their shoulders, as they weren't exactly given Luke and Leia levels of material to work with. The dialogue ranged from clunky to downright awkward (the entire "I don't like sand" speech), while the characters were meagerly fleshed out at best.
They both deserved better. As did the audience.
