For every great horror movie released in 2019, there were at least two terrible horror movies.

Over the last few years the horror genre has grown more complex and sophisticated. Horror filmmakers are pushing the genre into new territory. This trend continued in 2019. Yet, for every Midsommar, US and Doctor Sleep, there were at least 10 horror movies that failed to meet expectations.

2019 has shown us some of the worst habits of horror are still not behind us. We still had to put up with bad remakes. This year saw the release of some poorly-conceived sequels. 2019 even saw the return of the dreaded PG-13 horror movie. There was plenty of original horror movies to disappoint us this year, as well.

It was not all doom and gloom. Many of the 2019 horror movies that were guilty of relying on these old habits were poorly received by audiences and critics. As the year winds down, it is time to call out the worst horror movies of the year one more time.

After reading about the worst horror movies of 2019, make sure to cleanse your pallet with the best and most underrated horror of 2019.

10. Pet Sematary

Countdown movie
Paramount Pictures

It is no easy task to take King’s 300,000-word novels and turn them into digestible cinema, but within the last few years, it seemed like filmmakers had figured out a formula for making his stories work on the screen. Then 2019's Pet Sematary happened.

As the plot of Pet Sematary goes along the film loses momentum. The writer of the film (Jeff Buhler) seems to want to throw those who have read the novel off by changing details, especially in the third act. However, these changes seem to happen just to trick book readers as opposed to actually serving the story.

In the first act, the movie takes great joy in playing in the source material's dark Sematary. As the runtime continues, it feels like the movie gets bored of playing there, and by the third act, the plot feels void of emotion. At the end of Pet Sematary, you do not feel a whole lot of anything.
