4. Fear Street: Prom Queen

The success of R.L. Stine's Fear Street book series led to the teen horror saga being adapted into an interconnected Netflix trilogy in 2021. After receiving positive reviews, another three films inspired by Stine's novels were greenlit.

And based on how Fear Street: The Prom Queen turned out, the new trilogy is off to a rocky start. The plot drags through the first hour, offering little in terms of suspense or scares. Although this wouldn't be a problem if the script was tight, the clunky dialogue is painful to listen to. By the time the action kicks in, it's too little, too late. The story sets up a captivating mystery, but it doesn't amount to much, due to a predictable reveal and an uninteresting killer.

Although Fear Street always leaned into camp, The Prom Queen doesn't deal with its self-awareness effectively, so every wink to the camera comes across as forced and cringey.

Also, the gore is disappointingly tame. Even though the previous films were tongue-in-cheek, they never toned down the violence. As such, it's disappointing to see The Prom Queen compromise one of the brand's most defining qualities.

Some characters from the previous films return, but they're underutilised so poorly, their presence feels like a desperate attempt at fan-service.
