10 Worst Moments In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

9. Whenever A Character Talks About Their Angst - Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

The various members of the Guardians of the Galaxy are all lovable and relatable for their own reasons; everyone can find a character they identify with. The first film thrived from throwing these disparate characters together and forcing them on an adventure, with just enough backstory to understand their personalities and motivations. For Vol. 2, clearly there was plenty more oppurtunity to explore this band of misfits in greater depth.

But instead of finding intuitive ways of getting across these various moments of character development, Vol. 2 essentially stops every so often so a character can spew out their various tragedies and insecurities. You've got Yondu explaining why he raised Peter the way he did, Rocket venting about why he quarrels with Peter, Nebula talking about her resentment towards Gamora; pretty much everyone in the cast gets to have their confession time.

Not only does this slow the movie down, it's an incredibly inefficient way of developing characters in a sequel. Look at something like The Empire Strikes Back, where the various character revelations and intricacies are brought about through natural story progression.

Then look at Vol. 2, where characters get sad because something bad happened, talk about some internal problem often unrelated to the situation at hand, get a pep talk from whoever they're talking to, and then are spurred on to fight back. James Gunn clearly loves these characters, but the self-indulgent way he's decided to explore them shows he may have fallen too much in love with them.
