8. Zemo’s Impossible Plan - Captain America: Civil War

One of the many complaints about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was that Lex Luthor's plan was preposterous and ill-defined, relying on a lot of coincidences and unpredictable events that even he couldn't have predicted. Well, mere weeks later, Captain America: Civil War essentially suffered from the exact same problem. It just wasn't as obvious considering how well everything else about the movie worked.

Zemo's plan in Civil War is just as ridiculous and needlessly complicated as Luthor's, all building on an elaborate chain of events where he somehow knew which heroes would come out on top in each situation.

He was able to frame Bucky for the Sokovia Accords bombing, know that he would then be captured and not killed, then infiltrate his cell without being recognised, set Bucky on the loose without being caught himself, leading not only Cap and Bucky to his secret lair but also knowing Iron Man would follow them, all to essentially just to show them a security tape and hope they would then kill each other.

Not only is Zemo's plan impossibly crafted, it's mostly unnecessary to the story. Captain America, Iron Man and their respective allies were already in conflict before he got involved. He could have easily sat back and let them fight each other or, better yet, just send Tony Stark the tape of Bucky killing his parents. It's a scheme that only grows more absurd and needless the more you think about it.
