10 Worst Moments In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
6. Dr. Selvig's Gone Crazy - Thor: The Dark World
The Thor movies have an interesting relationship with humour. They're nowhere as goofy as, say, Guardians of the Galaxy, but their jokes never quite sit right even in a universe with a notoriously tongue-in-cheek tone. Thor: The Dark World suffered from a lot from odd comedic digressions, like the expanded role of Kat Dennings' Darcy and her new assistant or a frost monster running around London as a post-credits scene, but nothing was quite as awkward as the antics of Dr. Erik Selvig.
His behaviour seems like a huge leap from when we last saw him. Yes, it's said to be a result of his mind being messed with during the events of The Avengers, but it seems far too over the top. Hawkeye seemed to recover his brainwashing without much trouble, and yet Selvig is now institutionalized and coincidentally ranting about what the climax of the film is going to be. And by the time he pops back up again in Age of Ultron, he seems completely fine.
There are some comedic moments in The Dark World that really work, like Loki shapeshifting into Captain America or all the fun stuff with the portals in the finale, but forcing Stellan Skarsgaard to run around Stonehenge naked is not humour up to the standard of a Marvel movie. It honestly feels more like a rejected scene from a Michael Bay Transformers movie. Just replace Selvig with John Turturro and it'd fit right into place.
