10 Worst Moments In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

2. Malekith - Thor: The Dark World

There have been some weak Marvel villains; Yellowjacket, Kaecilius, and the afore-mentioned Killian just to name a few. But no villain in this franchise is as dull and forgettable as Malekith the Accursed from Thor: The Dark World. What is there even to really say about him?

The Dark World apparently received some serious reworking through reshoots and in editing, and one of the casualties of that was Malekith being severely downgraded. He was supposed to have a tragic backstory involving a dead family, giving him more motivation for his actions than "I want to destroy realms because Dark Elves are the best", but all his scenes dedicated to that history ending up on the cutting room floor to streamline the picture.

As a result, Malekith comes across as an incredibly generic villain with yet another evil plan to destroy the world.

On top of completely jettisoning all attempts at depth, Malekith also ends up wasting the talents of Christopher Eccleston. It's hard not to feel sorry for the guy when it comes to his work in genre.

He only got to play Doctor Who for one season, played Destro in GI Joe before being unceremoniously killed off-screen in the sequel, and now he also has to carry the mantle of being the worst MCU villain. There's nothing particularly wrong with his performance, but what the film presents us isn't a real villain. He's more like a living placeholder for a better one.
