10 Worst Movie Reboots Of The 2010s
Reboots can make money, but what about when they destroy great film legacies...
Reboots undoubtedly make studios huge amounts of money and some of them are triumphant returns for our favourite characters. However, behind the checks and dollar signs, there have been some truly awful attempts to redo beloved originals.
Some film franchises have proved to be better in our memories. It seems that everyone’s favourite film from the last thirty years is on the cards for a remake. While reimaginings of existing titles don’t make up as much of the market as continuing franchises, they still draw a significant amount of viewers. That's precisely why Hollywood even bothers with them in the first place.
In fact, last year saw three reboots chart in the top 10 grossing movies in the UK. Safe to say, there’s money in remakes but there are also the perils of managing fan expectations and making a film that’s good in its own right.
While some reimaginings appear to be a success, others are deemed truly terrible by every person with access to the internet.
10. Raiding Again - Tomb Raider (2018)
The original Tomb Raider films with Angelina Jolie were by no means critical hits. Yet, they did manage to catch the spirit of the early 2000s and nestle their way into the hearts of many. The rebooted franchise has yet to truly do this, but this isn’t because it’s necessarily bad, it just isn’t good either.
Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander starred as Lara Croft and with the backing of a successful game franchise, the new film looked like it could be a resounding success.
Sadly, though, the plot proved to be less engaging than that of the games and the film was quite dull. With that said, it did manage to avoid paying too much fan service and being a carbon copy of the original films. This was a good move as the original films haven’t aged very well when you look back on them now.
While many were thankful that Korn didn’t return to provide a theme song, the film still had trouble finding its footing. With a sequel around the corner, the new franchise has time.
