Apparently cashing in on the success of fellow 80s cartoon rip-off Transformers, there was talk of transferring Jem and The Holograms to the big screen from as early as 2011 but judging by the trailer that came out before its October release this year they neednt have bothered. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaPgK073xEg Anyone who grew up in the 80s can tell you two things about Jem: she wore a pair of magic star-shaped earrings and she and The Holograms had a bitchy rival band, The Misfits. But director Jon M. Chu (the same guy behind Justin Biebers Believe, so go figure) clearly paid no mind to nostalgia choosing to omit The Misfits and magic earrings and instead updating it for modern tweens by making the titular character a YouTube sensation. To cap it off, they put in a One Direction song as trailer background music for good measure. Perhaps not surprising considering original creator Christy Marx wasnt involved or even consulted during the making of the film, and what couldve been a bit of nostalgic kitsch instead came across looking like High School Musical. Movie goers clearly felt the same: it pulled in a paltry $1.3 million in its first weekend. And frankly, it deserved to make one of the worst opening weekends in box office history.
