8. Alien 3 Without Ripley
Not long after James Cameron's Aliens was a colossal hit, producers sought to put together the next sequel in the franchise, prospectively hiring Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) to direct. However, because of a pay dispute between Sigourney Weaver and 20th Century Fox, scribe Eric Red was asked to pen a script that - believe it or not - didn't include protagonist Ripley at all. In addition to this, there were no Xenomorphs, and instead six-legged, so-called "alien cattle". Taking Ripley out of the equation is one thing - she's the life-blood of the series, just pay her what she wants! - but to not even feature the series' iconic enemy would have been a tremendous mistake. This idea is impressive in its stupidity; it actually makes David Fincher's tepid final result sound pretty excellent by comparison. For all of its messiness, at least it includes the iconic mainstays of the series...
